Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
